Visit of Human rights experts to countries in September - October 2022

Human Lives Human Rights: Human rights special rapporteurs and specialized working groups investigate specific human rights situations around the world through independent fact-finding missions and monitoring strategies as part of the special procedures of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

These experts, who work on a voluntary basis, are not employees of the United Nations and do not receive salaries for their work.

Last month, the following countries were visited by the country experts. Additional details of these visits are as follows:

Mexico:

Time: From 29 August to 9 September

Visiting authority: UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights on internally displaced persons.

Objective: To assess the human rights situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in this country

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council in June 2023.

Bangladesh:

Time: September 4 – 15

Visiting authority: United Nations Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights in the context of climate change

Objective: To investigate the adverse effects of climate change on the human rights of communities in vulnerable situations, focusing on the damages caused by these changes.

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council, June 2023.

Nigeria:

Time: August 29 to September 9

Visiting authority: United Nations independent expert on the enjoyment of all human rights by older persons.

Objective: To examine the rights of the elderly in specific contexts, including humanitarian and emergency situations related to conflict and climate change.

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council in September 2023.

Turkey:

Time: September 4 – 15

Visiting authority: United Nations Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture

Objective: To assess how the authorities and the national preventive mechanism implemented the previous recommendations

Presentation of report: Submission of confidential initial observations to the Turkish government itself and the National Preventive Mechanism.

Jordan:

Time: September 5 – 15

Visiting authority: UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Objective: To assess the implementation of human rights standards on the ground to protect the rights of people with disabilities in the country

Maldives:

Time: September 11-22

Visiting authority: United Nations Working Group on Discrimination against Women and Girls

Objective: To assess progress and challenges in achieving gender equality and eliminating discrimination against women and girls

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council in June 2023.

Portugal:

Time: September 19 – 27

Visiting authority: UN special rapporteur on human rights and environment

Objective: To investigate the challenging summer from the climate point of view caused by heat waves and forest fires and other parts of the world.

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council in March 2023

Madagascar:

Time: September 20-30

Visiting authority: Independent expert on the enjoyment of human rights by people with albinism

Objective: To obtain information about the right to health, education and employment of people with albinism

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council in March 2023

Japan:

Time: September 26 – October 7

Visiting authority: UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights of internally displaced persons

Objective: To assess the human rights situation of internally displaced people due to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council in June 2023

Ecuador:

Time: September 25 to October 1

Visiting authority: United Nations Subcommittee for the Prevention of Torture

Objective: To investigate the ongoing violence in the Ecuadorian prison system that has resulted in the death of hundreds of prisoners in recent years

Presentation of report: To the government and to remain confidential until Ecuador decides

Slovenia:

Time: September 29 to October 6

Visiting authority: UN special rapporteur on human rights and environment

Objective: To evaluate the national implementation of this right in a country that is considered the champion of environmental protection

Presentation of report at: Human Rights Council in March 2023
