Human Lives Human Rights: A recently published report by the Special Committee of Inquiry into Israel’s Actions has raised serious concerns, suggesting that Israel’s military operations in Gaza meet the criteria for genocide. Released on November 14, 2024, the report highlights how the ongoing blockade, obstruction of humanitarian aid, and extensive bombings have created life-threatening conditions for Palestinians. Experts from the committee indicate that the destruction of vital infrastructure—such as water and sewage systems, agriculture, and healthcare—will lead to long-lasting crises for future generations.
The report reveals that by early 2024, over 25,000 tons of explosives, equivalent to two nuclear bombs, have been dropped on Gaza. The use of artificial intelligence for targeting, combined with limited human oversight, has resulted in significant civilian casualties, particularly among women and children. Additionally, severe media censorship and the removal of pro-Palestinian content from social media platforms have been identified as efforts to stifle independent reporting.
The committee has stated that these actions constitute clear violations of international law and represent an alarming effort to silence independent voices while undermining the United Nations’ ability to provide humanitarian assistance. It calls for immediate action from governments worldwide to halt these violations and address the ongoing crisis.
It is important to note that in 1968, the UN General Assembly established a Special Committee to monitor, investigate, and report on the actions of the Israeli regime in occupied Palestine. This committee was tasked with safeguarding the human rights of the Palestinian people and other Arabs in the occupied territories, including East Jerusalem, Gaza, the West Bank, and the occupied Golan Heights. This year’s committee members include representatives from Malaysia, Senegal, and Sri Lanka, who jointly published the report.
