Human Lives Human Rights: The prominent anti-racist organization KISA (Action for Equality, Support, Antiracism) in Nicosia, Cyprus, fell victim to a despicable attack, leaving its premises severely damaged by an improvised explosive device.
“Last night’s assault on KISA’s facilities is abhorrent and raises grave concerns regarding the safety of human rights defenders in Cyprus. This reprehensible act did not occur in isolation. It reflects a distressing surge in racist violence across the country, with KISA and its volunteers repeatedly targeted by threats, verbal assaults, and smear campaigns in their steadfast efforts to support refugees, migrants, and combat hate crimes.”
“Cypriot authorities must swiftly and unequivocally condemn attacks on human rights defenders and NGOs, sending a clear message that such acts will not be tolerated. An immediate, thorough, independent, and impartial investigation into this attack must prioritize the hypothesis that it was linked to KISA’s human rights and anti-racist endeavors. Additionally, urgent measures must be implemented to ensure the safety of KISA staff and activists.”
Background:
In the early hours of January 5, an improvised explosive device was detonated outside KISA’s premises, causing extensive damage to the building, including windows, photocopiers, and computers.
In recent years, KISA and its volunteers have endured numerous threats and harassment from anti-migrant and nationalist factions, with investigations into these incidents yielding little to no tangible outcomes.
Cyprus has witnessed disturbing incidents of racial violence, including pogrom-like attacks targeting racialized individuals, refugees, and migrants in Chloraka and Limassol. The European Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI) noted a concerning rise in xenophobic rhetoric within the country.
Despite being removed from the Registry of Associations in December 2020 and facing obstacles in its operations, KISA continues its vital work as an advocate for equality and justice, with its appeal against dissolution pending before the country’s Appeal Court.
