Human Lives Human Rights: In light of increasing violence in Sudan, Rights groups are calling for an immediate cessation of attacks on civilians by all parties involved in the ongoing conflict. Over the past week, escalating violence has been reported in towns and villages throughout Gezira state, leading to significant human suffering.
Reports from relatives of victims, gathered through remote interviews, reveal that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) have launched brutal assaults on communities in Tamboul, Rufaa, Al-Hilaliya, Al-Seriha, and Al-Uzibah, resulting in deaths occurring in homes, markets, and on the streets. Additionally, the RSF has been implicated in widespread looting of property, including from markets and hospitals. The UN reports that these attacks have also led to the displacement of thousands of individuals seeking safety.
Human rights advocates are calling for all nations complicit in sustaining this violent conflict to halt both direct and indirect supplies of arms and ammunition to all combatants. Furthermore, there is a pressing need for the enforcement of the UN Security Council’s arms embargo on Darfur to prevent further escalation.
The alarming reports of extreme violence from Gezira state have prompted urgent appeals for the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) to put an end to all indiscriminate and intentional attacks against civilians nationwide. All conflict parties are also urged to ensure safe passage for civilians attempting to escape from conflict areas, as well as to facilitate unimpeded humanitarian aid delivery to those in need, ensuring that assistance is provided without discrimination.
This critical situation demands immediate global attention and action to protect civilians and uphold human rights in Sudan.
