A look at the 51st session of Human Rights Council - 4th Meeting

Human Lives Human Rights: The United Nations Human Rights Council held its 51st regular session from 12 September to 7 October 2022 at Palais des Nations, Geneva.

October 3:

On October 3, the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent told the Human Rights Council that the human rights situation of persons of African Descent remained of urgent concern. The Working Group was outraged at continued incidents of racially motivated violence against people of African descent.

October 4:

On October 4, the Human Rights Council concluded its general debate on agenda item nine on racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, and related forms of intolerance: follow-up to and implementation of the Durban Declaration and Programme of Action. Many speakers welcomed the work of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent. They said the comprehensive action-oriented Durban Declaration and Programme of Action remained an essential tool for fighting racism and racial discrimination.

October 5:

On October 5, the Human Rights Council continued with its agenda item on technical assistance and capacity building, holding an interactive dialogue on the situation of human rights in South Sudan and concluding the enhanced interactive dialogue on the situation of human rights in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Director of the Field Operations and Technical Cooperation Division at the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, said the activities of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan continued to yield positive impact on the beneficiaries, particularly in terms of heightened awareness of human rights concerns in the different communities.

In the noon, the Council held an interactive dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Cambodia. This was followed by an interactive dialogue with the Independent Expert on the situation of human rights in Somalia.

October 6:

On October 6, the Human Rights Council held a general debate on technical assistance and capacity building. Also, the head of the Asia Pacific Division in the Office of the High Commissioner presented the Secretary General’s report on Cambodia and the High Commissioner’s report on Georgia.
