Human Lives Human Rights: At least 141 Palestinian journalists and media professionals have been killed, and 70 others injured in Israel’s ongoing war on the Gaza Strip, according to a report by the government media office released on Thursday.
The statement, issued in commemoration of World Press Freedom Day on May 3, also disclosed that at least 20 journalists are currently held in Israeli prisons.
The media office described these events as part of “the genocidal war waged by the Israeli occupation army against civilians, especially children and women in the Gaza Strip.” It further stated that both Israel and the United States bear “full responsibility for the Israeli crimes against journalists and media professionals.”
The media office urged the international community to protect Palestinian journalists and to pressure Israel to end its “genocidal war against journalists, civilians, children, women, and the Palestinian people.”
Since a cross-border attack by Hamas on October 7, Israel has conducted a relentless offensive on the Gaza Strip. This offensive has resulted in the deaths of nearly 34,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, and 77,800 others injured. The ongoing conflict has caused massive destruction, pushing 85% of Gaza’s population into internal displacement amid severe shortages of essential supplies like food, clean water, and medicine.
An interim ruling from the International Court of Justice in January ordered Israel to cease genocidal acts and ensure humanitarian assistance reaches civilians in Gaza.
